Cedar Hedges – Why you should maintain your investment

May 6, 2016 by John

Cedars (Thuja) are of the most hardy evergreens in Canada. Throughout the country there are few areas where you cannot grow at least one variety of cedar.

Here in Ottawa Eastern White Cedar or simply just White Cedar is the most common variety. They are used as accents in landscapes to provide privacy from neighboring properties and most commonly as hedges along property lines…living fence.

The beauty about cedar hedges if properly maintained, they can be tailored to specific requirements. Both the height and width can be managed with a proper maintenance schedule. Cedar hedges are a growing investment adding value to your property, do not trust just anybody to maintain that investment. Choose professional, reputable companies who are knowledge based and watch that investment grow.

How to Maintain Cedar Hedges

May 3, 2016 by John

Hedges should be pruned from an early stage to help establish good structure and promote healthy growth. Whether the hedge is new or established, it should be tapered so it is wider at the bottom than the top. This will help ensure the lower parts receive adequate sunlight, while also helping to reduce the effects of winter damage. This is not always obtainable with older established hedges however by consulting a professional, ideally a Certified Arborist, they can assist in implementing a maintenance program to rejuvenate your cedar hedge. Remember do not trust just anybody, call a professional.

When to Trim Your Cedar Hedge

There is no written in stone answer to this question, some say spring others say fall but the truth is you can trim a cedar hedge most anytime of the year, it just depends how you are pruning it. Assuming the hedge is healthy and not under stress, May through September is the typical timeframe to trim hedges.

Should I Fertilize and Water my Hedge?

Fertilizing is a very important aspect to keeping and maintaining your hedge, fertilizing during May/June with a 30-8-8 (or similar product) will help provide your hedge with its nutrient requirements. Always ensure the nitrogen content is slow release, one application provides a boost for the entire growing season. The preferred method of application is deep root fertilization which also helps to reduce soil co mpaction. Like most trees, cedar hedges love water, during the hot/dry summer months watering once a week during the early morning or evening hours will allow your hedges to thrive. The best method to water is a drip hose installed at the base of the hedge.
